Dr Yunus asked to surrender by Nov 7
The High Court has asked the country’s only Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus to surrender before it by November 7 in three cases filed over illegal sacking of employees in Grameen Communications.
The HC bench comprising by Justice Moenul Islam Chowdhury and Khondakar Diluruzzaman passed the order on Monday.
The court also directed the police not to arrest and harass him.
Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud stood for Dr Yunus.
According to details of the cases, some employees of Grameen Communications wanted to form a trade union, which was not allowed by the company and later those employees were sacked.
Thereafter, three employees of Grameen Communications filed three separate cases against its Chairman Dr Yunus, Managing Director Naznin Sultana, and Deputy General Manager Khandaker Abu Abedin.
The plaintiffs of the cases are Grameen Communications Workers’ Union general secretary Abdus Salam, publicity secretary Shah Alam, and a member of the union Emranul Haque.
In the cases, they accused the trio of sacking them illegally for their role in the formation of a trade union at their workplace.
The accused were asked to appear before the court on October 8.
As Dr Yunus did not appear before the court at the appointed time, an arrest warrant was issued against him by Dhaka 3rd Labour Court Chairman Rohibul Islam on October 9.
Dr Yunus’s lawyer Raju Ahmed at that time informed the court that his client was abroad, and he will appear before it after returning to Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, the court granted bail to Naznin, and Abedin when they appeared before it, and sought bail.
