12 missing after boat sinking in Jamuna River

The locals and fire service workers rescued 16 drowning people from Jamuna River when a boat sunk with 28 person on board who were returning from Chukaibari union of Dewanganj upazila in Jamalpur later on Wednesday.

The people had gone there to receive rice from a program operated by Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF), said Officer-in-Charge of Dewanganj police station, MM Moinul Islam.

Moinul Islam told Jago News, the fire workers were searching for another 12 people who were missing after the boat sunk. The boat sailed for Char Halka Hawrabari, in the middle of the river, from Futanibazar Ghat and sank near Tiner Char around 9pm in the day.

The Additional Superintendent of police of Dewanganj circle, Rakibul Hasan Rassel said, the rescue operation was resumed today what was suspended due to troubled weather at that night.
