Labour court summons Noble laureate Dr Yunus

A Dhaka court has asked Noble laureate Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus to appear before it for allegedly sacking three employees of Grameen Communications after they formed trade union.  

Dhaka Third Labour court passed the order on Wednesday. 

Dr Yunus have to appear before the court on October 8.

The court also asked Managing Director Nazneen Sultana and Deputy General Manager Khandaker Abu Abedin of the organization to appear before it on the same day.

On July 3, three employees - Emranul Haque, Shah Alam and Abdus Salam - filed three separate cases against Dr Yunus and two others with the labour court. 

According to the case statement, a plaintiff is identified as Abdus Salam, son of Moslem Uddin from Kumar Khali of Kustia district, was the General Secretary of the proposed committee of Grammeen Communications Labour Union. He was appointed in the organization as a Computer Operator with a permanent designation of Junior MIS on 27 June in 2005.

The publication secretary of the union was Shah Alam, son of Nazrul Islam from Elahi Mosjidpara in Nilphamari district. He was appointed in the organization on 1 February in 2011 holding the same designation. And Emranul Haq, son of Safar Ali from Narikeltola village in Bahubal thana of Habiganj district was a member of the union. He was appointed in the same post on 14 March in 2013.
