Yellow journalism hampering journalists` image: Iqbal Sobhan

Prime Minister`s Media Advisor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury today said a number of media has been hampering the glorious image of the journalist`s community by practicing yellow journalism.

"Many people from various media houses have been practicing yellow journalism and these media are damaging our dignity and image," he said while exchanging views with local journalists and elite of the society as the chief guest at the Circuit House in the district, BSS reports.

As a journalists` community leader, he said, "We want to freedom for journalism, on the other hand, we have to resist falsehoods and unethical practices in journalism in the name of freedom."

The media advisor also said that the government has provided assistance to 700 journalists from the Journalist Welfare Fund, adding, "more journalists would be assisted in future."

Chaired by Deputy Commissioner M Khalilur Rahman, the view exchange meeting was also addressed, among others, by Jatiya Press Club (JPC) president Mohammad Shafiqur Rahman, general secretary Qamrul Islam Chowdhury, Chief Editor and Managing Director of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Abul Kalam Azad, former JPC president Khondokar Monirul Alam, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) president and vice president of JPC Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, BFUJ secretary general Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) president Altaf Mahmood, DUJ general secretary Quddus Afrad, Superintendent of Police Emran Hossain, BFUJ Treasurer Khairuzzamn Kamal, BFUJ leader and chief reporter of BSS Madhusudan Mondal, JPC joint secretary Ashraf Ali, former DUJ president Omar Faruk, former general secretary Shahban Mahmud and CUJ former president Sahidul Alam.

Earlier, the journalists` leaders placed wreaths at the mazar of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Tungipara and offered fateha and special prayers.
