Two suspected muggers were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in the city’s Sat Rasta intersection early Friday, reports UNB.

The deceased were identified as Naim, 35 and Jamal, 38.

Mahiuddin Faruki, additional superintendent of police of Rab-2, said the elite force members arrested two people - Hanif and Litu - from Gazipur in connection with their suspected involvement in car hijacking on Thursday night.

After interrogation, Rab came to know that the members of a car hijacking syndicate will hand over a snatched vehicle to its owner in exchange of money on Thursday night.

Later, a team of Rab-2 conducted a drive at Sat Rasta intersection around 4:30 am and gave signal to a covered van to stop.

But ignoring the instruction of the Rab team, the gang members tried to flee and opened fire on the elite force, forcing them to fire back in self-defence, leaving two criminals dead on the spot.

One pistol, four bullets and some equipment used to break lock were recovered from the spot.
