Info ministry issues show cause notices to cable operators

The Information Ministry today issued show cause notices to two cable operators for airing Bangladeshi advertisements in foreign channels.

The two cable operators are Nationwide Media Limited and Jadu Vision Limited, said a press release in Dhaka today, reports BSS.

The release said the two operators are violating the subsection-19 (13) of the Cable Television Network Act, 2006 and airing local product advertisements on foreign channels.

Earlier, the ministry issued several notices urging all cable operators of the country to stop airing Bangladeshi advertisements in foreign channels from April 1.

Ministry sources said the sub-section put a restriction on airing locally-produced advertisements on foreign TV channels.

Besides, a platform of electronics media called for stopping the “illegal usage” of the downlink – the transmission of a signal from a satellite to a receiving station. According to the platform, this practice of downlink usage has been affecting the sustainability of Bangladeshi local private channels as well as the media industry in Bangladesh.

Airing the advertisement of local products on foreign channels had been hampering the revenue of the private television channels of Bangladesh, the platform added.
