Voting suspended at Maitree hall, provost removed

The voting in Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and hall union polls was suspended at Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree hall on Monday morning after recovering a sack of ballot papers sealed in favour of Bangladesh Chhatra League nominated panel.

The suspension came one and a half hours after the elections to DUCSU began around 8 am.

DU pro-VC (Administration) Prof Muhammad Samad announced the suspension of voting.

In this incident, Shabnam Jahan was removed from the post of provost of the hall. Professor Mahbuba Nasreen, director of the disaster management of the university, was made the new provost of the hall.

A four-member probe body led by Prof Samad was formed, said university’s Assistant Proctor Abdur Rahim.

The agitated students surrounded the pro-VC as he went to visit the hall.

The students were seen showing some rigged ballot papers to the vice-chancellor, who was trying to settle the issue with them.

In this connection, Prof Dr SM Mahfujur Rahman, Chief Returning Officer of DUCSU polls, said: “The voting has been postponed at the hall and we are observing the matter.”
