The Khirsapat mango of Chapainawabganj has got the Geographical Indication (GI) certification.

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun on Sunday formally handed over the certificate to Dr Md Shafiqul Islam, Chief Scientific Officer of Chapainawabganj Regional Horticulture Research Center under the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI).

The handing over ceremony was held at the industries ministry while State Minister Kamal Ahmed was present.

With this, Khirshapat has become the third product after Hilsa and Jamdani to get the GI tag.

The development comes after the BARI applied for GI certification for the mango variety in February last year on behalf of the growers of Chapainawabganj, one of the main mango-producing districts.

Industries Minister also directed the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks to complete the registration processes for the mangoes of Langra and Ashina to get GI certifications.

GI is a name or sign used on products to certify that it possesses certain qualities for being made or produced as per traditional methods or enjoys a certain reputation due to its geographical origin.
