No bar to hold DNCC by-polls

The High Court has cleared the way for the authorities concerned to hold the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral by-polls.

The court lifted its earlier order that stayed the process for holding the by-polls and also discharged the rule issued questioning the legality of the election schedule.

The HC bench of Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order as no lawyer appeared for the writ petitioner.

On February 25, 2018, the Supreme Court asked the HC to expedite hearing and disposal of its previous rule that halted the by-election to DNCC mayoral post.

The process for holding the elections was to remain halted until the HC rule are disposed of, the court said.

The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant with the death of Annisul Huq on November 30, 2017.
