Cops foil job seekers’ demo at Shahbagh

Police on Saturday foiled the demonstration of a group of jobseekers under the banner of Bangladesh Chhatra Parishad demanding extension of age limit to 35 from 30 for entering government jobs.

Law enforcers ejected the agitators who took their position at the Public Library and detained seven to eight of them.

Police said they were trying to create anarchy.

Spokesperson of Bangladesh Chhatra Parishad Imtiaz Hossain said police foiled our peaceful program. Though, we have been doing nonviolent movement for six years.

Azimul Haque, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Ramna zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said a rally is scheduled to be held at Suhrawardy Udyan while Prime Minister Sheikh will present. Hence, we told them to arrange their programme later for the security purpose.

The detainees will be freed after interrogation, he added.

In June, a parliamentary committee on public administration had recommended to increase the age limit for entering civil service to 35 years.

It again made the same recommendation on September 10.

Currently, the age limit for entering public service is 30 and the retirement age 59.
