Illegal cigarettes Tk 1.5 crore seized in Sylhet

Members of customs intelligence seized homemade illegal cigarettes worth Tk 1.5 crore from Gazi Borhan Uddin market in Sylhet on Monday.

An intelligence team of Sylhet Customs Excise and VAT Commissionerate led by its commissioner Md. Golam Monir conducted a drive in the Sylhet’s Gazi Borhan Uddin market and confiscated a total of 232 cartoons illegal cigarettes from the Makka store, says a press release.

The worth of seized cigarettes is Tk 1.5 crore with value-added tax (VAT).

The process of legal actions is undergoing against the Makka store and the two manufactures- Beauty Tobacco and National Tobacco.

The government fixed the price of per piece cigarette is Tk 4. But the vested quarters sell it Tk 1 to 2, therefore, the government lose a huge amount of revenue.

Prior to this, Customs intelligence conducted several drives in order to stop such an illegal business in Sylhet.
