FE Editor Moazzem Hossain passes away
A. H. M. Moazzem Hossain, editor of The Financial Express, passed away at the city’s Square Hospital this afternoon, reports BSS.
He was 71.
Hossain, also the daily’s publisher on behalf of its owning company, International Publications Limited (IPL), had been suffering from lung-complications.
He left behind his wife, one son, one daughter and a host of relatives to mourn his death.
Hossain did Honours Graduate (1967) and post-Graduate (1968) in Economics from Dhaka University.
On completion of his studies, he joined Habib Bank Limited, Karachi, Pakistan, as an officer in Training and Research Department and later worked with the Investment and Capital Issues Wing of the Ministry of Finance, Government of Pakistan, Islamabad, as a research official.
His work as a professional journalist began with the then, The Bangladesh Observer, as a member of its reporting team. He later worked as a Special Correspondent of The New Nation and thereafter, simultaneously as Economic Editor of the United News of Bangladesh (UNB), Dhaka and Executive Editor, The Dhaka Courier.
Later on, he joined the Daily Star, Dhaka as its Economic Editor.
He was a member of the management board of the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) from 1995 to 2001, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) — the national news agency — from 1997 to 2000.
He was the President of Economic Reporters’ Forum at its launch in 1992.
He was a member of the Board of Directors of Janata Bank, a nationalised commercial bank, for two consecutive terms. He was also a director of Securities Trading Company Limited, a subsidiary company of Investment Corporation of Bangladesh (ICB). Hossain was also an independent director of Bay Leasing & Investment Ltd and Southeast Bank Limited.
He was a Fellow and, later on, a Senior Fellow of the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS).
Hossain was a recipient of Life Term Achievement Award of Economic Reporters Forum for Excellence in Economic Journalism, the Distinguished Professional Award for Journalism by Mercantile Bank Limited and Nawab Bahadur Syed Nawab Ali Chowdhury National Award for Journalism.
