Students block farmgate, seek removal of Shipping Minister

A group of students blockaded Farmgate intersection on Tuesday demanding safe roads and removal of Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan following the deaths of two students in a bus accident in the capital.

Hundreds of students of Government Science College blockaded the key Farmgate intersection around 10:15am.

The agitated students echoed a nine-point demand which includes resignation of Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan - a transport leader who smiled when asked about the deaths of the two students.

Mazharul Islam, officer-in-charge of Tejgaon Police Station, confirmed the matter to Jago News.

On July 29, two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College, Dia Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib, were killed as the driver of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan bus ploughed into a crowd near the ramp of the Banani flyover, adjacent to the Armed Forces Medical College in Kurmitola.

On July 30, the High Court directed the owners of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan to provide Tk5 lakh within a week to each family of the two students. The court also ordered the bus owners to bear all the costs of treatment of the nine students injured in the accident.
