Hallmark chairman Jesmin gets 3 years in jail

A Dhaka court has sentenced Hallmark group Chairman Jasmine Islam to three years in jail in a case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for not submitting a property statement.

Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman of Special Judge Court-5 in Dhaka on Wednesday passed the order.  

On October 2012, the ACC filed 11 cases against 27 top officials of Sonali Bank and Hall-Mark Group including Jasmine, who secured bail in all the cases later.

On August 4, 2013, Dhaka metropolitan senior special judge’s court granted bail to Jesmin Islam on a condition that she would pay Tk 100 crore every month until Tk 2,600 crore loan was repaid.

Later, she enjoyed free life for about three years violating the conditions of her bail. 

On November 1, 2016, ACC arrested Jasmine Islam on charge of misappropriating Tk 85.87 crore from Janata Bank’s Motijheel branch between June 2011 and June 2015.
