‘Government unfairly arrested Shafik Rehman’

The government unfairly arrested journalist Shafik Rehman resorting to a deception only with a political intention said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

The BNP leader said this on Tuesday while speaking at a discussion arranged by Jagpa at Photojournalists Association demanding the release of journalist Shafik Rehman.

He said Shafik Rehman’s arrest has shaken the entire nation and those who even differ with his political ideology are also raising their voice against it.

Fakhrul alleged that the ruling party has taken a position against democracy and freedom of expression just to hang onto power as it has become politically bankrupt.

Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested journalist Shafik Rehman from his residence of Eskaton in the capital on Saturday.

Later he was  put on a five-day remand in a case filed in connection with a plot to ‘abduct and kill’ Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son and her ICT adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
