Fresh attack on quota reformists

The leaders and activists of quota reform movement was allegedly attacked again by the Chhatra League at the central Shaheed Minar in the capital on Monday.

Their flag procession programme was foiled after the attack.

The attackers all were the leaders and activists of Dhaka University (DU) including some colleges, said the quota reform agitators.

One of the leaders of quota reform movement Faruk Hasan who is the joint convener of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad was picked up by the Chhatra League from the spot, said quota reform leader Lutfunnahar Lina.

However, Mehedi Hasan Sani, General Secretary of DU Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall, denied the allegation of mayhem.

Attack

Earlier on Sunday, detectives arrested Muhammad Rashed Khan, joint convener of the platform, in a case filed by a Chhatra League activist under the Information and Communication Technology Act.

The protesters took to the streets on February 17 and continued the protests for reducing quota in government jobs to 10 per cent from the existing 56 per cent.

In the face of protests across the country, the prime minister announced in parliament on April 11 that the quota system in government jobs would be abolished.

The platform began the indefinite strike on May 14 as the government failed to meet their deadline for the publication of a gazette notification abolishing quota system as was announced by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on April 11.
