Quota reformists attacked

Three quota reform leaders of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad were allegedly injured by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at central library building of Dhaka University on Saturday.

Of the injured, joint convener of the Parishad Nurul Haque Nur is in critical condition.

The attack took place when they were taking preparation to hold a press conference to brief their next course of action as the government failed to issue a gazette notification by their deadline.

The platform began the indefinite strike on May 14 as the government failed to meet their deadline for the publication of a gazette notification abolishing quota system as was announced by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on April 11.

The protesters took to the streets on February 17 and continued the protests for reducing quota in government jobs to 10 per cent from the existing 56 per cent.

In the face of protests across the country, the prime minister announced in parliament on April 11 that the quota system in government jobs would be abolished.
