Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today expressed his optimism that Eid holidaymakers would not face traffic congestion on highways.

“We are trying to reduce plying of vehicles without fitness on roads. If unfit vehicles become out of service on roads or if vehicles ply on wrong side, it would be difficult to check traffic jam,” he said.

Quader, also Awami League General Secretary, said this to newsmen while visiting Dhaka-Tangail highways at Kaliakair upazila.

The minister said if heavy rain occurs, speed of vehicles may be slower on highways but vehicular movement won’t be stoped.

Quader said Chandra-Elenga four-lane on Dhaka-Tangail highway would be opened completely on June 12 marking the holy Eid-ul-Fitr.

He said the facilities would be provided till the Eid holidaymakers would return to their workplaces.

“But we cannot inaugurate the four-lane now. After the Eid-ul-Fitr, Prime Minister will inaugurate the four-lane,” he added.

Highway Police DIG Md Atikur Rahman, Gazipur Police Super Mohammed Haru-or-Rashid and Gazipur highway police super Md Shafiqul Islam, were present on the occasion, among others.
