11 drug traders including councilor killed

Eleven drug traders including a ward councilor were killed in separate incidents of reported gunfights across the country in the early hours of Sunday.

In Cox’s Bazar, Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-7 exchanged firing with a gang of drug traders at Noakhalipara area in Teknaf upazila early Sunday. 

Later they recovered the body of Teknaf ward councilor Md. Ekramul Haque and 10 hundred pieces of yaba, a foreign made pistol, a one-shooter gun, six round bullets and five shells of bullets from the spot, said RAB-7.

Haque was the top drug trader listed by home ministry and department of narcotics control, it added.

In Chattogram, Md. Rayhan, 38, a drug trader, was killed in an alleged gunfight with police at Sandeep ferry ghat of Guliakhali in Sitakunda upazila at 12:45am.  

Police arrested three associates of the deceased from the spot.

In Kushtia, Halim Mondol, 35, a drug trader, was killed in a reported gunfight with police at housing ‘D’ block filed around 1:30 am.

At that time, four members of police were also injured. 

A shutter gun, a pipe gun, three round bullets, eight hundred pieces of yaba were recovered from the spot, said Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Kushtia Model Police Station.

In Meherpur, police recovered a bullet-hit body of a drug trader at Garabaroee village of Gangni upazila. 

The deceased Hafizur Rahman Hafi, 48, was accused in more than 24 cases under Narcotics Control Act.

Harendra Nath Sarker, officer-in-charge of Gangni Police Station, said after hearing the sound of firing, police rushed to the spot and recovered a bullet-hit bodies of Hafi.

A pistol, 112 bottoles Phensedyl were recovered from the spot, he added.

In Noakhali, Hasan alias Yaba Hasan, a drug trader, was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Bogadia area of Sonaimuri upazila at 12:30 am.

Three members of police were also injured during the gunfight.

In Jhenaidah, Rafiqul Islam Liton, 36, a drug trader, was killed in a reported gunfight between two groups of drug traders at Borodah Jamtola in Shailkupa Upazila.

Police recovered arms, bullets, Phensedyls and Yabas.
