‘Tougher movement from Monday if gazette not issued by 5pm’

Quota reform protesters have begun their demonstration on college and university campuses across the country to press home their demand for publication of a gazette regarding abolition or reform of quota system.

They will boycott classes for indefinite period if the gazette is not published by 5pm today.

Hasan Al Mamun, Convener of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad, on Sunday came up with the announcement at a press conference in front of the TSC of Dhaka University.

Earlier, the protesters on Wednesday threatened to begin demonstrations from Sunday if the government failed to publish the gazette by Thursday.

The protesters launched the movement on February 17 and continued it for five-point demands, including reduction of quota in public service recruitment to 10 per cent from the existing 56 per cent.

In the face of mass protests by students across the country, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced scrapping the quota system in parliament on April 11.
