SC directs EC to arrange GCC polls by June 28

The Appellate Division of Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to arrange the polls of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) within June 28 scraping the order of High Court that stayed the polls for three months.

A four-member bench of the SC led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on Thursday passed the order.

Earlier, Jahangir Alam and Hasan Uddin Sarkar, mayoral candidates of the Awami League and BNP, also petitioned the court to move against the High Court’s stay order.

On Sunday, the High Court postponed the Gazipur City Corporation election for three months, an election that was scheduled for May 15.
