Lightning kills 23 in different districts

At least 23 people were killed in lightning strikes in Habiganj, Sunamganj, Manikganj, Kishoreganj, Nilphamari, Rajshahi, Jamalpur, Sirajganj, Mymensingh, Narayanganj and Gaibandha districts of the country today.

Of them, six people were killed in Habiganj, two each in Nilphamari, Kishorganj, Manikganj, Sunamganj, Rajshahi and another one in Sirajganj, Gaibandha,Mymensingh, Naryanganj and Jamalpur districts, BSS reported.

In Habiganj, six farmers were killed and nine others injured by lightning strikes while they were cutting paddy at different haors in Baniachong, Nabiganj, Lakhai and Madhabpur upazilas of the district.

In Nilphamari, two people were killed when lightning struck them at Dimla upazila of the district this morning.

Police said the lightning followed by a rainstorm hit housewife Asma Begum, 50, a resident of Balagram-Shalongram of the upazila, when she was in the yard of her house. She died on the spot.

In Rajshahi, two people including a college student were killed on the spot and two others sustained injuries when they were hit by thunderbolts in Tanore Upazila of the district this noon, locals said.

In Sunamganj, two farmers- Jewel Ahmed, 16, and Alamgir, 22, were killed by separate incidents of lightning strikes while they were working on fields in Dharamapasha upazila and Sulla upazila around noon.

In Narayanganj, school student Kulfi Akhter, 8, was killed as a thunderbolt struck her while playing at a field near her house in Sonargaon upazila.

In Kishoreganj, Md Shahjalal Mia, 25, a polytechnic student of Nikoli upazila, and Dipali Rani Barman, 35, of Pakundia upazila died in separate incidents of lightning strikes.

In Gaibandha, farmer Meher Ali, 35, was killed when lightning struck him on a field in Purbo Salua area of Fulchari upazila around 2:00pm.

In Mymensingh, Alal Uddin, 40, a farmer in Char Nilaxia village was killed by the lightning while working in the field, said Khandaker Shaker Ahmed, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Kotwali Police Station.

In Netrakona, Islam Uddin, 55, a farmer in Khaliajuri upazila died on the spot due to the lightning strike, said Md Hazrat Ali, officer-in-charge of local police station.

In Jamalpur, A man was killed by lightning in Dewanganj upazila in the district this morning.

The victim was identified as Habibur Rahman, 47, son of late Abdul Majid at village Moulavir Char in Char Amkhawa Union in Dewanganj upazila.
