The Supreme Court has granted Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) one more year to demolish its 15-storey building located in Dhaka’s Hatirjheel area.

The court gave BGMEA one-year time from April 12 for compliance its order to demolish the illegal structure.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hussain passed the order following a petition filed by BGMEA seeking a one-year time for relocating the BGMEA bhaban.

In 2011, the High Court gave order for demolition of the 15-storey building as it was constructed in defiance of relevant laws.

BGMEA later filed a leave to appeal petition with the Appellate Division against the High Court judgment, but the apex court on June 2, 2016, dismissed the plea as well as asked the RMG producers to demolish its headquarters at once and at its own cost.
