Sixteen to receive Independence Award this year

Sixteen distinguished personalities, including 1971 veterans, have been nominated for the Independence Award- 2018, the highest state award, for their 'glorious and outstanding" achievements at national level.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to hand over the awards among the recipients at a function in Osmani Memorial Auditorium on March 25, said an official release.

The nominees are Qazi Zakir Hasan (posthumous), SMA Rashidul Hasan (posthumous), Shankar Gobinda Chowdhury (posthumous), Air Vice Marshal (retd) Sultan Mahmud, Bir Uttam, M Abdur Rahim (posthumous), Bhupati Bhushan Chowdhury alias Manik Chowdhury (posthumous), Shaheed Lt M Anwarul Azim (posthumous), Humayun Rashid Chowdhury (posthumous), Shaheed Amanullah Mohammad Asaduzzaman (posthumous), Shaheed Matiur Rahman Mallik (posthumous), Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque (posthumous) and Amzadul Haque in Independence and Liberation War.

Professor Dr AK Md Ahsan Ali will receive the award in medical science, Professor AK Azad Khan in social service, Selina Hossain in literature and Dr Md Abdul Majid in food security.
