Attackers on Zafar Iqbal to be brought before justice: IGP
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Muhammad Javed Patwary on Monday said the attackers on Prof Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal will be brought to justice after finding them out.
"We strongly condemned the attack on Prof Zafar Iqbal and assured you of bringing the attackers to justice," he said while addressing a concert against drug and terrorism as the chief guest at Jagannath University (JnU) here.
Vice Chancellor of the JnU Dr Mizanur Rahman presided over the function. Teachers and students of the university and high officials of police were present on the occasion, reports BSS.
Describing Prof Iqbal as a member of the police force as his father was a policeman, the police chief said, "We have detained the family inmates of the arrested attacker and the investigation into the matter has already started."
So far we can know the detainee was a self-radicalized militant," he said, adding that they will let the media know if they will get anything new. The IGP stressed the need for raising a social movement against the drugs saying, "It is impossible for the police alone to fight drugs as it is social problem and the society needs to fight together against the menace."
Speaking on occasion, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah said, "Drug is the number one problem of our country and the militancy is second one. A social war against it is a must to perfectly address the issues."
