Attack on Zafar Iqbal: Cases filed, attacker uncles held

Two cases have been filed over the attack on noted writer and professor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal.

SUST Registrar Mohammad Ishfaqul Hossain filed a case with Jalalabad Police Station on Saturday night. Apart from police filed another case on Sunday morning.

However, two uncles of Fayzur Rahman, who stabbed Zafar Iqbal were detained by the law enforcing agencies.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained Faizur’s paternal uncle Abdul Kahhar in a drive conducted in Kaliyarkapon area under Derai upazila of Sylhet on Saturday night.

The attacker’s maternal uncle Fazlur Rahman Fazlu was detained from the Shekhpara area in the outskirts of Sylhet on the same night.

Fayzur Rahman stabbed Zafar Iqbal in the head during a programme at SUST in Sylhet on Saturday afternoon.

Prof Iqbal was first admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and then to Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka for better treatment.

The attack occurred around 5.40pm. The attacker was immediately taken down and detained by authorities after a severe thrashing.
