Ex-Rangpur mayor Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu passes away
Former mayor of Rangpur City Corporation Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu on Sunday passed away while undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital. He was 66.
Jhantu was admitted to the hospital on February 4 following a brain hemorrhage.
He left behind his wife, only son and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of Jhantu.
In a condolence message, the Prime Minister recalled with profound respect the contribution of Jhantu to the development of Rangpur city.
"His death is an irreparable loss to Rangpur as well as the country," she said.
Sheikh Hasina prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family, reports BSS.
In separate message, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury condoled the death of Jhantu.
She said Jhantu was a pro-people leader and a politician imbued with spirit of Liberation War. His death is an irreparable loss to the country, she added.
Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, Deputy Speaker Md Fazle Rabbi Miah, Chief Whip ASM Firoze, State Minister for Labour and Employment Md. Mijibul Haque and State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Mashiur Rahman Ranga also expressed profound shock at the death of Jhantu.
In separate messages, they also prayed for eternal peace of departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
