Delay in Rohingya repatriation may complicate the issue: Jhonson

British Secretary of State of Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Boris Jhonson emphasised on quick repatriation of Rohingyas saying delay in the repatriation may complicate the issue.

Boris Jhonson put emphasis when he called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her Gonobhaban residence here on Friday.

Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim came up with the information while he was briefing reporters after the meeting, reports UNB.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also agreed with the remarks of the British Foreign Secretary.

Both of them also agreed that after the repatriation of the Rohingyas, Myanmar authorities should allow international organisations, including the UNHCR to provide humanitarian assistance for the Rohingyas.

Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh has given temporary shelter to over one million Myanmar nationals and such huge refugees from Myanmar are a big burden on Bangladesh.

She said Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi should act sincerely to this end.

Referring to the Koffi Annan Commission Report on the Rohingya crisis, the Prime Minister stressed the implementation of the report for having a durable solution.

The Prime Minister also brought to the notice of the British Foreign Secretary the attack carried out on Bangladesh High Commission in London on Wednesday last.

In reply, Boris Johnson assured the Prime Minister of looking into the issue.

The British Minister compared the Rohingya refugees like the one that happened in Palestine in 1948 when over 600,000 people were displaced from their homeland.

The British Minister appreciated the Prime Minister for her stance on safe and dignified repatriation of the Rohingya refugees.

About terrorism, Johnson highly lauded the government of Sheikh Hasina the way it contained terrorism and militancy.

In response, the Prime Minister said law enforcement agencies worked in their way to root out terrorism, while her government carried out a countrywide campaign involving common people against such social menaces.

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, Prime Minister’s Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi, Principal Secretary Nojibur Rahman and British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Alison Blake were present.
