Weeklong ‘Madhu Mela’ inaugurated in Jessore

A weeklong 'Madhu Mela' in celebration of the 194th birth anniversary of poet Michael Madhusudan Dutta was inaugurated at Sagordari in Keshabpur Upazila of the district today.

District and upazila administration in association with the cultural affair ministry jointly organised the fair to mark the birth anniversary of the poet. The Mela will continue till January 26, reports BSS.

Local Government, Rural development and Co-operatives Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain inaugurated the Madhu Mela as the chief guest while State Minister for Public Administration Ismat Ara Sadique, Advocate Monorul Islam Monir MP, Zila Parishad Chairman Saifuzzaman Pikul, Police Super Mohammad Anisur Rahman, district Awami League president Shahidul Islam Milon, Keshabpur Upazila Parishad Chairman HM Amir Hossen, Press Club Jessore President Zahid Hasan Tokon, Keshabpur Municipality Mayor Rafiqul Islam were present as special guests.

Deputy Commissioner of Jessore Md.Ashraf Uddin presided over the inaugural session.

A series of colourful events like circus, varieties of rural sports, seminar on Madhusudan's life and works and cultural programmes will feature the weeklong fair.

A total of 200 stalls showcasing traditional textile and cottage industry products have been set up on the Mela venue.

Michael Madhusudan Dutta was born at Sagordari village in Keshabpur Upazila under Jessore on 25 January,1824. He died in Kolkata on 29 June, 1873.
