Crime tendency comes down half in last 5 yrs years: IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) A K M Shahidul Hoque today said the tendency to commit crimes came down nearly half in last five years from 2013 to 2017 due to intensified vigilance of the law enforcement agency.

"Police have shown tremendous success in curbing terrorism and militancy . . . Due to police's vigilance, the tendency to commit crimes has come done almost half in last five years," he told journalists at a press conference ahead of the Police Week-2018, which begins on January 8.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to inspect annual police parade as chief guest at Razarbagh Police Lines on that day and President M Abdul Hamid will attend a dinner with police officials.

Hoque said "By reviewing the documents, we can say that cases have been lodged following almost every incidents of robbery, burglary and murder committed in 2017 and police have been able to unveil mysteries behind those every crimes and arrest the accused. A total of 1, 07,153 cases have been lodged during the time and 1, 15,528 accused have been arrested,".

The police chief said Bangladesh is now a role model in curbing militancy thanks to successes of his force in eliminating terrorism and militancy.

The IGP in the press briefing said this year 182 police members will be adorned with Bangladesh Police Medal and Bangladesh Police Medal (service), President Police Medal and President Police Medal (service).

Additional IGP (operation and administration) Md Mokhlesur Rahman, Additional IGP (SB) Dr Md Zaved Patwari and Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Miah were present on the occasion, among others.
