Govt seeks review of SC verdict on 16 amendment
The government has filed a petition with the Supreme Court (SC) seeking review of its judgement that cancelled the 16th Amendment to the Constitution.
The Attorney General’s office on Sunday submitted the 908-page review petition containing 94 grounds on which the apex court may consider the prayer.
The office had collected the certified copy of the Appellate Division judgement on November 26 for submitting the petition.
On July 3 this year, the SC unanimously declared the 16th Amendment to the constitution illegal, which means parliament no longer has the power to impeach judges of the apex court.
The amendment - passed on September 17, 2014 - empowered parliament to dismiss SC judges if allegations of incapability or misconduct made against them were found true.
