DNCC mayor post declared vacant
The mayor post of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) was declared vacant on Sunday four days after its first mayor Annisul Huq passed away.
"The mayor post of the DNCC was announced vacant on Sunday (December 3). The gazette notification will be issued on that date," Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain told journalists at the Secretariat today.
"The process of issuing notification in this regard is underway", the minister said, adding that Election Commission would hold the by-poll to the post within 90 days as per the law.
Terming Annisul Huq as the most successful mayor in the history of Dhaka City Corporation, Mosharraf said DNCC has started transforming into a modern city under his supervision. He started to change the city's Tejgaon and Gabtali areas, he added.
"It's reality that he (Annisul) is no more. The DNCC will implement the initiatives undertaken by him," the local government minister said, adding that the LGRD ministry will come forward to this end, if the city corporation faces any barrier in this regard.
Replying to a question about new mayor, the minister said, "It would not be easy for the new mayor to go out of the foundation that was built by Annisul Huq. Successor has to be innovative like the ancestor".
Annisul Huq breathed his last at a London hospital around 4:23 pm (London time) on Thursday. He was kept on life support at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital due to cerebral vasculitis.
The first elections to the divided Dhaka city corporation were held in 2015. Annisul Huq was elected as the first mayor of the DNCC with the nomination of ruling Awami League.
