Bangladeshi jailed for molesting maid in Singapore

A Bangladeshi national has been sentenced to 11 months in jail and three cane strokes after he was found guilty of molesting an Indonesian maid in Singapore.

Hannan, the 32-year-old marine trade worker, has been identified guilty of two counts of outrage of modesty.

During the hearing, the prosecution revealed that the Bangladeshi man and the Indonesian maid did not know each other prior to the incident, which happened on September 2, 2017.

According to the prosecution, the Indonesian maid was at a Teban Gardens playground with her employer's son and niece during the time of the incident. Another maid from Myanmar was also present at that time. Hannan reached the playground, approached the victim and asked for her phone number at about 6.30 pm.

Irritated by the behavior of Hannan, the Indonesian maid, along with the other three people, started leaving the playground. But Hannan tailed the group, and by around 6.40 pm, he provocatively grabbed the victim's breast from behind.

The maid was shocked and she shouted at Hannan. She quickly moved away and within no time, she reached the lift at her HDB block.

An adamant Hannan was not ready to leave the maid, and he repeatedly asked her to give the phone number. Hannan soon went over the maid and tried hugging and kissing her. During the time of the hearing, the deputy public prosecutor revealed that Hannan squeezed her body so tightly that she even felt some pain.

Hannan refused to leave the spot until she reached her floor. He backed off only after he got a strong hit from the victim on his chest. All these incidents were captured on a CCTV camera, and it became a crucial evidence before making the judgment.

After reaching her room, the Indonesian maid soon informed her employer, and he confronted Hannan in no time. Despite continuous questioning, the accused denied having molested the victim. A male passerby helped the employer to spot Hannan and soon the Police were informed.

The deputy public prosecutor said that Hannan committed the act in broad daylight, using force to tame the victim. He also called the act of Hannan targeted and pre-meditated, and made it clear that severe punishment should be given to the convict.
