Voter registration begins in city

The Election Commission (EC) started updating the voter list in Dhaka city today and the registration would continue till November 5.

“. . . Those who will be 18 years old on January 1, 2018, will be included in the updated voter list during this period (Oct 14-Nov 5),” SM Asaduzzaman, director (public relations) of the EC Secretariat, told BSS today.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda visited the voter registration activities at Siddheswari Girls' School on Bailey Road here this morning.

Besides, Election Commissioners Mahbubur Talukader, M Rafiqul Islam, Begum Kobita Khanam and Brigadier (retd) J Shahadot Hossain Chowdhury visited four centres at Kalachandpur Government Primary School, Jhikatola Model Government Primary School, Muslim Modern Academy and Mirpur Adarsha High School respectively.

On July 25, the Commission started the door-to-door data collection drive across the country and the particulars of about two lakh eligible voters were collected.

Now the Commission began collecting photographs and fingerprints of the eligible voters in the capital.

The EC will continue its voter list updating activities at 50 centres under the jurisdiction of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and 77 other centres under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) during this stipulated timeframe.

Those who earlier failed to fill voter registration forms during the data collection campaign will also be able to get registered as voters at the registration centres, Asaduzzman added.
