The Supreme Court on Sunday gave seven-month time to Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to demolish its building constructed illegally in Dhaka’s Begunbari canal and Hatirjheel Lake.

A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah gave seven-month to demolish the BGMEA building.

On August 23, the garment makers’ platform appealed to the court for the extension of the deadline.

The High Court ordered it to be taken down in 2011 as the building was constructed in violation of the law. The Appellate Division in June last year upheld the verdict.

The BGMEA building built about two decades ago endangered wetlands in Dhaka. In 1998, then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of the building.

The building was inaugurated in 2006 by Khaleda Zia as prime minister.
