Law offing to confiscate properties of Bangabandhu’s killers: Anisul

Law Minister Anisul Huq today said the government is working to formulate a law to confiscate properties of the convicts, who have already been executed, of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman murder trial.

“We don’t need to formulate a separate law to confiscate the properties of fugitive convicts in the case. An order has already come from the court in this regard and properties of a couple of convicts have been confiscated.” Anisul said.

The minister came up with the observations while addressing a seminar organized by Awami League’s research-wing Centre for Research and Information (CRI) at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in capital’s Dhanmandi.

He said that the government will find out all the convicted fugitive killers of Bangabandhu by any means and bring them back to the country to face the justice.

“No government but of Awami League tried to hold trial over that barbaric killings, instead indemnity ordinance had been issued to obstruct the trial process. They backed the killers, posted them in foreign missions and destroyed case documents. As a result the killers were able to strengthen themselves abroad and now we are finding it difficult to bring them back,” Anisul added.

The law minister said convicted killer Noor Chowdhury is living in Canada right now and lodged an appeal, saying, he would be hanged if he is sent back to Bangladesh.

“As a country that does not allow the capital punishment, Canada has given condition not to execute Chowdhury if he is repatriated. Can we accept this condition? He has been convicted by our Supreme Court. In spite of all these, we have been trying to bring him back. We have also appointed lawyers to speed up the process of bringing back another convict KM Rashed Chowdhury from the US,” Anisul said while talking about government’s effort in bringing back the fugitive killers.

Presided over by former chairman of National Human Rights Commission Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman, the seminar was addressed by Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid, Begum Fazilatunnesa Bappy, MP, CRI trustee Radwan Mujib Siddiq, Prof Delwar Hossain and daily Janakantha executive editor Swadesh Roy, among others.
