Wage board for journalists unnecessary: Muhith

There is no need for a wage board for journalists as they are paid more than civil servants, said Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith.

He made the comment following a meeting with Newspaper Owners Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) at the secretariat on Tuesday.

“Journalists shouldn’t have a wage board; their salary should be determined by the market,” said the minister.

He also said, “I have understood that journalists under a wage board are paid more than civil servants and that’s why a wage board is totally unnecessary.”

“There are 500 newspapers in Dhaka and all are rubbish; we can take decision on facilities and other matters of 15 to 20 newspapers,” he added.
