HC orders reinstating DU teacher sacked

The High Court (HC) today ordered Dhaka University (DU) authorities to reinstate Prof Dr Md Shahadat Hossain, sacked recently over allegations of sexual harassment.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md. Faruque passed the order, declaring illegal the DU order terminating the social science department teacher.

The High Court came up with the order, disposing of a rule it had issued on June 7 in this regard, reports BSS.

“No show cause notice was served to Dr Hossain before his termination or no opportunities were given to him to produce any statement in self defence. It was clear violation of the varsity act,” said Barrister Aneek R Haque, who moved a writ for Dr Hossain.

Two female students of the department brought allegations of sexual harassment against the professor in July, 2016. The university authorities, after scrutinizing the allegations, decided to sack him on March 6, 2017.
