JS will pass again scrapped 16th amendment: Muhith

Finance Minister AMA Muhith today said the Jatiya Sangsad was likely to restore its authority in impeaching higher judiciary judges by passing again the 16th constitutional amendment scarped by the Supreme Court.

“We will again pass the 16th amendment in parliament . . . we will continue to pass it (every time the SC scraps the provision),” he told newsmen while visiting the acquired land for Sylhet Medical University at Dakkhin Surma area.

The minister also criticized the Supreme Court judges' attitude towards parliament saying “such attitude is unexpected”.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Shahidul Islam Chowdhury, Sylhet district Awami League General Secretary Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, former Bangladesh Ambassador to the United Nations Dr AK Abdul Momen and Sadar upazila chairman Ashfaq Ahmad, among others, were present on the occasion.

On July 3, the Supreme Court upheld a High Court verdict that declared illegal the 16th amendment to the constitution, dismissing a state appeal against it.
