SC stays function of DU VC-panel

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today stayed further activities of Dhaka University (DU) three-member panel to elect next vice-chancellor (VC), asking High Court to dispose of a rule issued in this regard in four weeks, reports BSS.

A three-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order, asking current vice chancellor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique to continue his duty till the disposal of the rule.

The High Court on July 24 issued a rule challenging the legality of a special meeting of the DU senate to nominate three members of VC-panel. The HC came up with the order following a writ filed by 15 registered graduates of the varsity.

But the Appellate Division Chamber Judge court on July 26 stayed the High Court order and sent the matter to the Appellate Division regular bench for further hearing.

On July 29, the special meeting of the senate was held and three-member VC-panel was formed by less than half of the total 105-member senate as per 1973 DU Ordinance.
