Govt takes back 8 jute mills
The government has taken back eight jute and textile mills from private sector for violating the major conditions set out during handing over the state-owned enterprises, according to a jute and textile ministry statement issued today.
The authorities concerned kept the mills closed for a long time after taking over those from the government, the ministry said.
"The prolong closure of the mills caused unemployment of thousands of workers, which in fact negates the main objective of the handing over those to the private sector," the statement said.
Besides, the ministry said that the mills authorities did not pay the dues to Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC), Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation (BTMC) and other financial institutions as per the agreements signed with them.
The ministry further said that the mills authorities also did not comply with some other major conditions of handing over that prompted the government to take back the mills.
The mills are: Fouzi Jute Mills at Ghorashal in Narsingdi, Madaripur Textile Mill, Kokil Textile Mills Limited in Brahmanbaria, A R Hawlader Jute Mills Limited in Madaripur, Eagle Star Textile Mills Limited in Chittagong, Jalil Textile Mills Limited in Fouzdarhat, Chittagong, Dhaka Jute Mills Limited and Gausia Jute Mills Limited in Dhaka.
