Heavy downpour plays havoc with city life
Active monsoon propelled heavy downpour for the last couple of days till date has created huge sufferings for the urban people specially the city dwellers in their daily life.
Met office recorded 56 mm rainfall in the capital in last six hours from 6:00 am to 12noon on Wednesday.
According to a Met office bulletin, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions during 24 hours commencing at 10:00am today.
As a result of the rainfall, landslide may occur at places over the hilly regions of Chittagong division, the bulletin added.
Meanwhile, city's most of the areas including Rokeya Sarani, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Senpara Parbata, Merul Badda, Gulshan, Bijoy Sarani, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Arambagh, Secretariat, Paltan, Motijheel, Sukrabad, Kolabagan, Gulistan, Manik Mia Avenue and the parts of Old Dhaka were inundated due to the incessant downpour.
Commuters, especially office goers and students of schools and colleges have been facing severe problems in reaching their destinations for lack of transports. "I am waiting at the bus stand for two hours since 8.30am for getting a bus or CNG-run auto-rickshaw to reach the office at Mothijheel," said Nilima Haq, a private bank official at Mirpur 10.
Many roads got waterlogged due to the rain, intensifying their woes. The city dwellers were seen stranded for hours in traffic jam. Low-income people,especially the day labourers, are suffering much as rains are disrupting their normal pace of life. Apart from, rickshaw pullers and CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers have been charging excessive fair taking advantage of the inclement weather.
However, the intensity of rainfall across the country is likely to come down from tomorrow, said Md Aftab Uddin, duty forecasting officer of Bangladesh Meteorological Department. Meanwhile, maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to lower signal, said a Met office special bulletin on Wednesday.
