Record rainfall collapses civic life in Ctg

The heavy downpour for last three consecutive days collapsed the civic life causing immense sufferings to the people of Chittagong as the two-thirds of the city went into knee to waist deep water.

Patenga Meteorological office measured 232.8 millimetres of record rainfall during the last 24 hours ending 6pm today causing serious disruptions to civic life, port and businesses activities in the city.

City’s all rivers, canals and drains were full to the brim of floodwater caused by the torrential rainfall coupled with full tide water, reports BSS.

Not only the roads but also all educational institutions, dwelling houses, shops, mosques, temples and parks are reeling from huge deluge.

The torrential downpour forced Chittagong Port to suspend loading and unloading activities at the outer anchorage of the port.

Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport sources said some flights schedules were disrupted because of heavy downpours.

The heavy downpour which began Saturday and continued caused massive water-logging.

Sufferings of the city residents knew no bounds as the city areas went under knee to waist deep water for unprecedented heavy downpour throughout the day.

The business hubs Khatunganj-Chaktai was severely affected by the rain and tidal waters as more than 5,000 business establishments in the area were submerged and daily essential commodities inside the warehouses were damaged.

Heavy rainfall created water logging in many areas including Lalkhan Bazar, Bahaddarhat, Muradpur, Chandgaon, Shulakbahar, Bakalia, Patharghata, Asadganj, Korbaniganj, Chaktai, Nasirabad, Pathantuli, Madarbari, Agrbad, Halishahar causing immense sufferings to the people living in those localities.

Transport problems triggered by the heavy rainfall caused untold sufferings to the commuters.

Rickshaw-pullers and three-wheelers were seen demanding excessive fare from the commuters taking advantages of the bad weather and thin traffic.

Meanwhile, congestion of vehicles in some important city streets including Muradpur, Bahaddarhat, Agrabad, Halishahar and Sholoshahar was seen as the heavy onrush of rainwater in those streets forced large number of mechanized and non-mechanized vehicles remained stationery that increased suffering of the commuters manifolds.

The Met office also forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in next twenty-four hours in Chittagong region.
