EC has no jurisdiction before announcement of polls schedule: CEC

Chief Election Commission (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said that the commission had no jurisdiction to intervene in the government activities before the announcement of the election schedule.

He made the remark in reply to a query by a newsman at a press briefing at the conference room of the Election Training Institute in Dhaka ‘s Agargaon on Sunday.

The election commission held the briefing to unveil a roadmap for the next parliamentary elections.

There is an allegation that police on Thursday intervened in a meeting at JSD leader ASM Abdur Rab residence where several political parties’ leaders including AQM Badrudduza Chowdhury, Abdul Qader Siddikey and Mahmudur Rahman Manna were present.

In a response to a query on the police intervention, the CEC said, “We will take action to ensure election environment after the announcement of schedule.”

“We have no request to the government now but we will do that, if necessary, after the announcement of polls schedule, ” he added.
