Farhad Mazhar to be released after interrogation: DMP
Poet, writer and columnist Farhad Mazhar, who reportedly ‘went missing’ from outside his city residence at dawn of Monday and subsequently rescued at night in Jessore, is now at the office of detective branch (DB) here and the poet will be handed over to his family after investigation, reports BSS.
“Mazhar has been taken to the DB office on Mintoo Road and he will be handed over to his family after interrogation and gleaning necessary information,” Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman told BSS.
Mazhar was initially taken to Adabar Police Station around 9am today after rescuing him from Jessore last night.
Earlier, Mazhar’s family members claimed that he was ‘kidnapped’ by unknown persons as they could not ‘trace’ him since early morning.
Police and family sources said within half an hour after he was ‘picked up’ Mazhar made a phone call to his wife Farida Akhter over his cell phone saying, “Save me, they have kidnapped me. They will kill me”.
Mazhar again called his wife at least thrice from his number and requested her to arrange Taka 35 lakh to be paid as ransom, the sources added.
Later, a joint team of Rab-6 and police rescued Mazhar from a Dhaka bound bus of ‘Hanif Paribahan’ at Nayapara in Abhaynagar upazila in Jessore around 11.30 pm.
A team of DMP along with Mazhar arrived in the city at 9am today from Jessore by a microbus.
