HC stays 90pc women quota for B.Sc nursing admission

The High Court today stayed for six months effectiveness of a nine-year-old notification declaring 90 percent women quota for securing admission in government institutes in B.Sc nursing.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir passed the order, issuing a rule asking as to why the court shall not declare the provision illegal.

The court asked nine people including Secretary of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to submit their explanations within four weeks.

“The concerned wing of the ministry issued a circular regarding admission in B.Sc Nursing. According to one condition in that circular, not more than 10 percent male candidates will be allowed admission, the rest of 90 percent of the total empty seats will be given to female candidates. This is complete violation of Article 28 (3) of the Constitution,” said Barrister Shakhawat Hossain Khan, who moved a writ in this regard.

After holding primary hearing in the matter, the High Court passed the aforesaid order.
