Rally demands duty free access to EU, US

Bangladesh Garments Workers Unity for Industry has demanded duty free market access for the safety and development of the country’s ready-made garments (RMG) labours.

The association on Tuesday made its demand while arranging a rally and human chain at National Press Club in the capital.

Addressing the rally, the speakers urged that the European Union (EU) should immediately withdraw their decision on Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) facilities considering some 45 lakh labours.

If the country doesn’t get the facilities, unemployment rate will be high, which would cause humanitarian crisis among the labours, a speaker said.

Another person said that developed countries have able to get the labours rights, democracy, gender equality, women development and human rights after the struggle of many years.

It also informed that Bangladesh is trying to achieve the recognition of lower-middle country through this sector.

Mentioning labours welfare, they called on that the government should collect 2pc tax rate on the selling products for the welfare of the labours.

Sirazul Islam Rabi, convener of the Bangladesh Garments Workers Unity for Industry presided over the rally while labours leader Kafil Ahmed, Lima Ferdous, Lavli Yasmin and Alomgir Roni were present at the rally, among others.
