Sayedee’s review hearing likely Sunday

Hearing on Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee’s plea, seeking review of Supreme Court judgement sentencing him imprisonment till natural death, is scheduled to be held tomorrow as the matter came on the cause list of the apex court.

A five-member Appellate Division panel headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha is set to hear the plea, which is the 30th matter on tomorrow’s cause list.

The apex court on April 6 set May 14 for holding hearing on two pleas to review apex court judgement that commuted Delwar Hossain Sayedee’s sentence of death to imprisonment till natural death in war crimes case.

The SC deferred the hearing till May 14 as Sayedee’s chief counsel Khandaker Mahbub Hossain pleaded for time.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on February 28, 2013, sentenced the Jamaat leader to death as it found him guilty of committing crimes against humanity in 1971.

He filed an appeal on March 28, 2013, against the tribunal judgement. The Appellate Division on September 17, 2014, commuted the death sentence to imprisonment till his natural death.

The state on January 12, 2016, filed the petition to review the apex court judgment, pleading to increase his sentence of imprisonment till natural death to maximum punishment.

Sayedee on January 17, 2016, filed his review plea, seeking acquittal from the charges of crimes against humanity.
