Government should create environment for press freedom: TIB

Transparency International, Bangladesh’s Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said that the government should create proper environment for the freedom of press in the country.

He made the remark on Tuesday while addressing a dialogue on “SDG16 and Governance: Government, Media and People” to mark the world press freedom day at TIB’s Dhanmondi centre in the capital.

“Government should be liberal against the critics,” said Iftekharuzzaman, adding that who obstructed the development of press, have got temporary facilities but in the long run failed.

Former Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda said that the state structure would be changed for ensuring the press freedom in the country.

He also said that the political parties of this country said a lot before the polls. But when they assumed power, they are always trying to grab the country’s all institution.

“We should change our mentality,” he added.

Among others, media personality Afsan Chowdhury, columnist Muhammad Jahangir, Deputy Executive Director of TIB Sumaiya Khayer, were present at the dialogue.
