No uranium in Sunamganj haor water

The three-member expert team of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission confirmed that they didn’t find existence of uranium toxins in the Sunamganj haor water in its primary test.

Dr Dilip Kumar Saha, chief of the expert team confirmed the matter to Jagonews24.com on Sunday morning.

The final judgment can be known after getting the laboratory test result in Dhaka, he added.

A three-member team, led by Dilip Kumar Saha, reached Sunamganj on Saturday night to test whether there was any effect of radiation regarding the deaths of fishes and ducks in the Haor water.

Dr. Bilkis Ara Begum and Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Debashish Paul are in the expert team.

On Saturday, a team of Dhaka University teachers visited the Haor areas to investigate the reason behind water contamination that led to death of fishes and ducks following the recent flash flood.

They examined the water quality, dead fishes and rotten paddy in Hakaluki Haor.

On Friday, separate teams of Fisheries Ministry and Fisheries Research Institute of Mymensingh and Chandpur visited the Haor areas over the same issue that has raised concerns among the farmers, who have lost their half-ripen paddy in the flood.

According to fisheries department, over 50 metric tonnes of fish have died after hilly water and excessive rains submerged a vast tract of the back swamp in Sunamganj and a few other northeastern haor zones.
